HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS
Under this project in March 2003 we build
a house for a family with three orphans
and in July 2004 another house for a family
where the father and two of the children
are disable. In 2005 we donated a house
for a family with two children who has lost
their house from the tsunami disaster. In 2006 we have build 10 houses and in 2007 we have build three houses and laid foundation for two houses. Our target is to build minimum 05 houses in every year.
RURAL DEVELOPMENT
The living standard of thousands of farmer
families in the North Central and Eastern
Provinces of Sri Lanka is very low. They
are living in small huts and 90% of these
families do not have sanitary facilities.
The fluorite level in the water in these
provinces is very high and 12% of the population
is suffering from renal diseases due to
this. The schools in these areas do not
have even the basic facilities and do not
have sufficient teachers. Due to this the
children do not get proper education. In
some villages the sick has to walk 10 to
20 km to a health centre and the children
to a school. We have selected the underprivileged
villages in North Central Province for development
under this project.
EQUAL EDUCATION FOR ALL
Under this project we have build a two
story building with six classrooms for Mavita
Junior School with a cost of US$.26000.00.
Mavita is an underprivileged village, 65
km away from the main city of Galle in the
foothills of Sinharaja Forest. This school
is one of the oldest schools in the district
and it has being neglected, mostly due to
the very poor economy of this village. Most
of the villages work in tea estates and
get a daily wage of $.1.75.
Also under Equal Education For All Project
we have build the laboratory building for
Gaminiwewa School in Medawachchiya with
a cost of US$.6625.00.
We have started a pre-school in this year, in the village Periyakulama. The Jephcott Charitable Trust in UK has funded this project. Karuna Trust will run this school without charging fees from the poor children.
SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAM
This is our major programme. We started this programme in 2004 and by now we have awarded 209 scholarships to deserving students. In addition to the above this year we gave 100 scholarships to deserving students from the underprivileged villages of North Central and Eastern Provinces. We give financial aid to these scholars from year six and continue till they complete their university education.
LIBRARY SERVICE
Under Equal Education For All Project, we have developed four libraries. In 2003, Sri Vajiragnana Dhamma School Library in Maharagama, in 2004 Samarasingharama Dhamma School library in Theliggavila, in 2005 Shikshakara Dhamma School library in Monaragala and in 2006 Rambakulama Temple Dhamma School library in Medawachchiya. In 2007 we have donated books to school libraries in Anuradapura Distrrict.
HEALTH CARE
Under this project we have started a programme
to prevent the children from early renal
diseases. We have distributed 100 fluorite filters to the families with children.
In the rural villages of Anuradapura District, over 50% of the homes do not have sanitary facilities. In 2007, we have build 100 toilets for the families with young girls, in three villages in Medawachchiya Divisional Secretariat Division. The Jephcott Charitable Trust in UK funded this project.
SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Katupotha is a traditional pottery village in Mihintale Divisional Secretariat Division. The villagers in this village are very poor and socially backward as they are suppose to be in a low cast comunity. They survive from the little money they get by selling the pots and other utensils that they make in the traditional way. There is a demand for their products. But they can’t produce that much in the traditional way. Their need was a clay-grinding machine where they can increase the quality and the production. With the request made by the Pottery Manufactures Co-operative Society in this village we have donated them a clay grinding machine and all the other facilities to install the machine. A Sri Lankan gentleman in Frisco in Texas funded this project.
