We started year 2010 with two minor projects. We had to go for minor projects because of the financial situation.
Thawalama is a remote village, 60 km away from Galle. Karuna Trust has started a project to develop the sports in Tawalama National School. With the help of the Sports Ministry we were able to get a National Coachers to give an advance training to the students who do athletics in this school. We did a week training for these students.
There are 32 schools in Tawalama and Neluwa educational zones. Non of these schools have got the facility to play chess as an indoor game. As a start we have introduce chess to Thawalama National School and had a two days training programme with the help of the Royal College chess teem. We donated a display board and 10 sets of chess boards to this school. We have trained a coach for this school and every other month we will be taking the Royal College coach over there to upgrade their knowledge. Our plane is to introduce chess to all the 32 schools in the zone and for that we will need
at least 100 sets of chess boards and 31 demonstration boards. One set of chess board will cost Rs.1000.00 and a demonstration board will cost Rs.11000.00.
While these training projects were going on I personally visited the 32 schools in this area and distributed a timetable to all the students, which was printed by Karuna Trust. Out of these 32 schools only the two national schools have got some facilities. Some schools do not have even the basic facilities.
Out of these 32 schools, Dellawa Junior School is in a very remote village where we have to walk 01 km to reach the school. This is a mixed school with 172 students and having only two toilet. We have selected this school as our major project for the year 2010. Immediately we will be building few toilets for this school. Then to start a library and a computer lab for the school. For this we will have to build a building with two rooms and this will take few months to get the approval of the Education Department. Meanwhile we will have to raise funds for this project.
