According to the data from the Ministry of Health, the economic crisis in Sri Lanka has exacerbate that 1 in 7 women have already reported to be malnourished during pregnancy and 1 in 8 children have born with malnutrition. Undernutrition in pregnant mothers is a key contributor to many problems.

The prices of milk, eggs, and other foods recommended for healthy pregnancies have tripled and the low-income pregnant women cannot afford to buy the vitamins and the other foods.

We have started a nutrition program for the low-income, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Here we give a bag full of nourished grains, monthly on the day before the full moon day. The mothers are selected by the Medical Officer of Health in the division. The package is sufficient for a family with two elders and two children for two weeks. This package costs US$ 25.00, (LKR 7000.00).
